Real Madrid is one of the most successful football clubs in the world and is also the most valuable – it is worth well over 3 billion euros. Being the world’s richest club it has also been able to buy some of the world’s most highly prized players, which in turn has added to its success. It has been among the top Spanish football clubs from the time it was first established (it was given the name Real, which means royal, in 1920 by the King of Spain at the time – Alfonso XIII) but as the Madrid Football Club it was also highly successful and goes back to 1902.
It has also won a record number of trophies. If we start with official matches and tournaments within Spain itself, to date Real Madrid has a total of 61 victories. It has once each won the Copa de la Liga and the Copa Eva Duarte (which today is the Spanish Super Cup), and the present day Spanish Super Cup 9 times. It has also been awarded the Copa del Ray 18 times and, the largest number of wins of all, has had 32 victories in La Liga (first division) matches.
In Europe Real Madrid has won the UEFA Champions League cup 9 times, and the later UEFA cup twice. The team has only made runner-up in the Winners’ Cup but has won the Super Cup once, in 2002. So that makes a total of 12 official victories in European championships.
In worldwide competitions, there have been three official wins, all in the Intercontinental Cup.
So if we add together the domestic, European and worldwide wins, Real Madrid has a total of 73 official victories.
There are also several unofficial victories in European and international championships. Looking at European wins, Madrid was twice winner of the Latin Cup, a tournament for the Latin European countries that was eventually replaced by the European Cup. In worldwide terms, it won the Small World Cup twice (this is a record) and once won the Copa Iberoamericana, a Latin American tournament.
So this gives us a total of 5 unofficial wins for Real Madrid. If you also want to count victories in friendlies, there have been 34 of these altogether; 10 in matches created by Real Madrid themselves and 24 in those created by other clubs.
If you click here you can find images of all trophies won by the club, both official and unofficial ones, as well as complete lists of the dates when the matches took place. If you scroll down you will also find information about their less well known basketball trophies. If you explore the club’s website you can also find information about the many prizes and honours that have been awarded to individual players.
Many of the club’s wins are record-breaking in themselves, such as their 32 La Liga victories and their 9 UEFA Champion’s League titles. There are arguments among football fans about which is the most successful club in world history, but this one is certainly among the most often cited. Another thing about the club which is unusual is that it is owned by its members, and has been since its foundation over 100 years ago. The white home kit worn by the players has also remained unchanged since then.
