France had a 44-year-old score to settle with Germany. Back in 1870, France went to war with Germany and was badly defeated. At the end of the Franco-Prussian war (also called Franco-German War), Germany took two French provinces - Alsace and Lorraine.
The French hated Germany ever since and always wanted a revenge. Those two provinces remained as part of Germany until the end of the first World War.
