National Insurance credits are used when you are not able to pay your National Insurance contributions due to illness or other circumstances. National Insurance credits protect your entitlement to the basic State Pension and certain other state benefits by helping maintain your National Insurance record. There are Class 1 and Class 2 National Insurance credits.
