Cat Cafés are very popular in Japan and they are theme cafés where you can watch and play with cats. Cat(s) in Japanese is called 'neko', which is written as '猫'. The famous Japanese writer Murakami Haruki is a big fan of cats, which you can see in many of his books.

In 1998, Taiwan had the world's first cat cafe and attracted many Japanese tourists. Six years later, the first cat caffe opened in Osaka, a city in the west of Japan.

Neko no mise (cat's shop) is the first cat cafe opened in Tokyo in 2005. Those cat cafes normally charge an hourly rate at around $ 8 -10 per hour. Most clients are 20s-30s females who love cats but can't get one themselves.

It is estimated that in Tokyo there are around 50 Cat Cafés. Find out more, here.
