In 1946, French automobile engineer Louis RĂ©ard invented the modern bikini: Two-piece bathing suits. Louis was very proud of his invention, and promoted it as "smaller than the world's smallest bathing suit."

Louis named the bikini after the Operation Crossroads nuclear weapon test site in the Pacific -- Bikini Atoll. America exploded two atomic bombs at Bikini in July 1946, and after the explosion, radiation levels were too high to fit to live in. Few days later after the atomic bomb blasts, Louis were to unveil the new women's bathing suit. The scene of women rolling up their beachwear to get a better tan gave him inspiration of the name. So, he decided to name after the bomb site- Bikini.
