Progressive music emerged in the 70's as an evolutionary sophistication of rock bands. Among them we find Pink Floyd, Yes, Genesis or Jethro Tull. This music is characterised by lengthy and complex songs, philosophical lyrics, virtuoso musicianship and a general attempt to take music further.

Despite its underground or cult status, progressive music has been at the vanguard of music and has many followers. Since the apparition of acclaimed band Dream Theater in the 90's, more progressive bands have emerged than ever before and as a consequence, a number of genres and subgenres.

There is progressive rock and progressive metal with bands like Dream Theater, Queensryche, Transatlantic or the Flower Kings.

There is symphonic rock which refers to bands that tend to blend classical influences with rock or even power metal, like Yes or Genesis and Iron Maiden or Helloween on the harder side.

Neo-prog is also a term used to described a new wave of bands that emerged in the 80's with a heavy keyobard sound and complex arrangements. Bands like arena, Saga or IQ are good examples of this musical trend.

These are the most common and representative trends in progressive music. However, doom, AOR or gothic bands incorporate progressive elements in their music which makes the list of progressive trends almost endless.
