ESL is the abbreviation of the phrase 'English as a second language'. Usually it is only used in American English, so it may not make any sense to a British or Canadian.

Instead, EFL (English as a foreign language) is used in British English.

ESOL is the abbreviation of the phrase 'English for speakers of other languages' while TESOL is the abbreviation of 'teaching English to speakers of other languages'.
