Who invented the equal sign?

The first equal sign appeared in the Robert Recorde's book, The Whetstone of Witte in 1557.
He wrote "And to avoid the tedious repetition of these words : is equal to : I will set a pair of parallel lines thus: =, because no two things can be more equal. And now mark these numbers."

The figure above shows an equation: 14x + 15 = 71
