Basque language or Euskera is the language spoken in the Basque country, a small area in the north of Spain, near where the Pyrenees meet the Cantabric Sea.

Euskera is one of the most mysterious languages in Europe and possibly in the world. Its origin is still the obect of controversy among linguists, who can't figure out which family of languages is Basque related to. Euskera is spoken by as many as 700.000 people, especially in the rural areas of Euskal Herria (this is the name of the region in their own language).

According to philologists and linguists, proto-Euskera is so old it predates the arrival in Europe of Indo-european languages (3rd or 5th millenium BC) and belongs to an old Eurasian group of languages.
