Child benefit is a payment that you can claim for your child. It is tax free, so you don't need to pay the tax for the money you get from child benefit.

Normally if you live in the UK and have a child under 16 years old, you are qualified for claiming child benefit. If your child is over 16 but under 20, you may still be able to claim depends on the circumstances. You can find out more here.

You can get £20.30 a week if you have only one child. If you have more than one child, you can get £20.30 per week for your oldest child and £13.4 per week for each of your other children. The payment is normally made every four weeks.

To claim child benefit, you need to fill in a child benefit claim form, which can be downloaded here. Send the filled form along with your child's birth certificate to the following address:

Update: If a person in a household earns more than £60,000, then he or she can't claim child benefit from January 2013. If you earn between £50k and £60K, you may have reduced child benefit payment, but you will have to fill a self-assessment form.
