English tennis players dominated Wimbledon during the first amateur years, when English tennis players Spencer gore, Frank Hadow, John Hartley, William Renshaw, Herbert Lawford, Ernest Renshaw, Willoughby Hamilton, Wilfred Baddeley, Joshua Pim, Harold Mahony, Reginald and Lawrence Doherty and Arthur Gore won the tournament from 1877 until 1909.

Only Australian tennis player Norman Brookes (winner in 1907) and Anthony Wilding (from New Zealand and winner from 1910 to 1914) disputed the English hegemony in this torunament. Since then, Fred Perry won the Wimbledon in 1935 and 1936, and no more English tennis players have won it ever since.

As for females, the same story goes for the amateur years: Maud Watson, Blanche Bingley Hillyard, Lottie Dod, Lena Rice, Charlotte Cooper Sterry, Muriel Robb, Dorothea Douglass Lambert Chambert, Dora Broothby, Ethel Thompson Larcombe, Kitty McKane Godfree, Dorothy Round Little, and Anglea Mortimer Barrett won Wimbledon for England. In the open era, Ann Haydon Jones and Virginia Wade were the last english female tennis players to win the tournament in 1969 and 1977.
