The first time LOL used as Laughing Out Loud (or Laugh Out Loud) was by Wayne Pearson in the 1980s. You can read the story here. On 24 March 2011, LOL was first documented in the Oxford English Dictionary due to its popularity and wide acceptance.

However, the earliest recorded use of LOL as an abbreviation was for "little old lady" in the 1960s.
