It's always in the teaching. As Albert Einstien once said,"If you can't explain it simply you don't understand it well enough.". Find a teacher who can explain it in a way that you understand and you will never look back.

First of all have confidence that you will be able to do it - if over a billion people around the world can use them with confidence you can too.

Keep it simple! Don't start by trying to catch a fly (like in the Karate Kid), or even to pick up two peanuts at the same time - a well known test of chop-skill.

Learn the basics, start by learning to hold the stationary stick properly then add the moving stick - you'll soon be the master of the art.
