Frida Kahlo was an artist from Mexico. She is best known as a painter, and especially for a number of famous self portraits. In her art she used her knowledge both of the Latin America of her own day (she lived in the first half of the 20th century) and Mexico's past history with its native traditions and later mix of cultures.

Kahlo is admired today for her awareness of indigenous culture, which is much more celebrated today than it was at the time. She is also seen as ahead of her time in her frank portrayals of women, very much showing them as human beings rather than "decorations". However her art is not mainly realistic but often described as surreal.

Kahlo had a number of health and personal problems, including an unhappy marriage. In spite of this she was very productive, producing over 140 paintings in her lifetime.
