Samuel Ryder (1858–1936) is the founder of the Ryder Cup Matches. He was an English businessman and entrepreneur from St Albans in Hertfordshire. He sponsored the Ryder Cup by donating a gold trophy which bears his name and encouraging the establishment of matches between USA and British teams on a regular basis. The Ryder Cup has become the most important golf team competition.
