The founder and CEO of Qwiki is Doug Imbruce. He was born in Connecticut in 1981 and studied English at Columbia University. While still a student he founded The U, a website to help people find and apply to colleges or universities. He went on to develop a web solution to help small businesses.

In 2009 Imbruce produced an early version of Qwiki. The idea of the site was, and is, to create audiovisual presentations from text and other raw data. He was then introduced to Louis Monier, who created the AltaVista search engine. The two began working together in Silicon Valley with a team of experts and technicians, and in 2010 they completed Qwiki. It was launched early in 2011 and is growing rapidly.
