Gerard Pique and Sergio Ramos are two of the most important defenders in mega-rival teams FC Barcelona and Real Madrid. There are rumours that they dont get along well and how this could affect the atmosphere in the Spanish national team.

Although rumours are only rumours, it is true a situation was produced in a joint press conference of both players in October 2010, in which Sergio Ramos was visibly uncomfortable when Gerard Pique wanted to answer a question in Catalan, his native language. When Gerard Pique was asked if he could answer a question in Catalan, Gerard Pique did so. After his reply, Sergio Ramos said to Pique "Why don't you answer in Andalusian?", to which Pique replied with a diplomatic smile.

It is said this press conference affected both players, known for being staunch defenders of Spanish and Catalan identities. One of the keys to the success of the Spanish team, "La Roja", was the ability of Luis Aragones and Vicente del Bosque to tune in all the players' different cultural identities into a coherent and homogeneous whole in which all players felt comfortable. In this Euro 2012, if Spain wins there will be no problem between players; but a number of defeats might break the balance. Again, the coach will have a key role in minimasing differences.
