The story of the two teams that played the europa league yesterday (May the 9th 2012), Atletico de Madrid and Athletic de Bilbao is much more related than people would actually assume from their different geographical locations.

The Atletico de Madrid Football Cup was founded in 1903 by a couple of Basque students living in Madrid who wanted to create a "branch" of Athletic de Bilbao in Madrid and thus wanted Atletico de Madrid to wear the same kit.

But what is interesting to know is that the white and red kit of Athletic de Bilbao was initially borrowed by Bilbao from Blackburn Rovers in the English tours of the Basque team throughout England. However, Athletic Club de Bilbao did not manage to buy the kit from Blackburn Rovers and ended up using Southampton's uniform, which is white and red as well.
