What happens to the toilet paper after being flushed in the toilet?

Average toilet paper is produced using shorter fibres than a normal paper (e.g.: writing paper) so this type of paper mixed with water will disintegrate and disappear in the septic tank or drainage.
In case that the paper is not biodegradable it will be part of the sludge at the sewage plant.
