Bashar el-Assad belongs to the Alawi religious group which is a branch of the Shia-muslim religious group. For years they were a marginalised group in a Sunni-dominated Syria until French colonial rule pushed members this minority into government positions. Now they hold most of the military apparatus and political power in Syria.
