With a total population of over 23 million (2010 statistics), Shanghai is the largest city by population in China and in the world. The municipality area of Shanghai is 6,340.5 km2 (i.e. 2,448.1 square miles) and the density is 3600 people per km2 (9,400/sq mi). The high population density is one of the factors to make Shanghai one of the most expensive cities to live in China.

As of August 2012, residential property was traded at an average price of 22,703 yuan ($3601) per square meter, while the national average was 15,500 yuan ($2458) per square meter.

The high end luxury houses/apartments cost an average price of 57,475 yuan ($9,117) per sq m in Shanghai.
