What is special about Kopi Luwak coffee?

Kopi Luwak is also known as Civet Cat Coffee, and is produced mainly in Indonesia and Sumatra. The clue to its 'special' nature is in the name.

Basically, when the coffee berries are ripe, they fall from the plant and the civet eats them. They pass through the body, the pulp is digested and the beans are later excreted. Farmers then pick them up, clean and prepare them. it is said to be this process of being partly fermented inside the civet's body that gives Kopi Luwak its special flavour.

It certainly costs a lot compared to most coffee types, and you might think the way it's produced would be off-putting to many people. But sales are very high and a lot of people want to try it not in spite of the civet's role in the process but because of it. A lot of users comment on its smooth texture and distinctive taste; others buy it for friends as a curiosity.
