Yes, it is. There have been countless predictions that the world will end at a certain date, and as soon as one date has come and gone somebody will come up with a new one. 21 December 2012 has been calculated as the date of the end of the world according to the Mesoamerican calendar, often called the Mayan calendar as it was used by and associated with the Mayan people. Some people interpret it as meaning that this date will just be the start of a great change, physical or spiritual; but either way they expect something major to happen.
Is there any evidence for this? The answer, very simply, is no. The really interesting part of these 'end of the world' predictions is the need people seem to have to belie ve in them, and the way that facts don't shake this belief at all. If you know anyone who believes the world is going to end this December, I bet you that on 22 Dec they won't be the least bit embarrassed but will just start looking around for the next 'doomsday date'. You can find a sample list here.
