In the universe, the moon is the closet planet to earth. The surface of the moon is made of rock, but scientists are not quite sure about the internal composition of the moon yet. But the structure of the moon is most likely similar to earth. It has layers: crust, mantle and core.
The crust of the Moon is the outermost layer, and also the layer that scientists have gathered the most information about. The crust of the moon extends down to a depth of 50 km, and is composed of oxygen, silicon, magnesium, iron, aluminum, calcium, , titanium, potassium, uranium, thorium, and hydrogen.
The mantle of the Moon is believed to be mainly composed of orthopyroxene, clinopyroxene and minerals olivine. The core, also called lunar core, is the innermost of the moon. Scientists believe that the lunar core is made of metallic iron, sulfur and nickel. The moon shines because it reflects sunlight, and has no light of its own. Since the moon does have atmosphere to protect it, anything heading towards the moon will crash into its rocky surface. The gravity of the moon is the reason of the tides happening on earth's oceans.
