Based on the level of respect or formality, you can say "Why are you sad?" in Korean in 3 ways:

Informal wae seulpeo? 왜 슬퍼?
wae seulpeo-hae? 왜 슬퍼해?
Formal wae seulpeoyo? 왜 슬퍼요?
wae seulpeo-haseyo? 왜 슬퍼하세요?
Very Formal wae seulpeusipnigga? 왜 슬프십니까?
wae seulpeo-hasipnigga? 왜 슬퍼하십니까?

  • why: wae (왜)
  • you: neo-neun (너는), dangsin-eun (당신은), dangsin-ggeseo-neun (당신께서는) - can be omitted
  • sad: seulpeun (슬픈)
