Sliver reacts to sulphur and forms a yellow film, which then turns brown and goes black eventually. Unfortunately, items used in the daily life like newspaper, wool, rubber, eggs, spinach, onions, mayonnaise all contain sulphur, even the air contains sulphur. Silver is not just easily tarnished, but also can be corroded by salt, acids, and chlorine bleach. The best way to keep silver in good condition is to use it, wash it frequently.

Wash silver cutlery in hot water with little washing up liquid. Do not wash silver and stainless cutlery together, and do not put them in the dish waster because the reaction with different metals or chemicals in the dishwasher can damage the silver.

Dry silver with a soft cloth immediately after it is rinsed in hot water. Since water droplets can corrode silver, do not leave it to dry naturally.
If your silver cutlery is already tarnished, you can use the following method to get rid of the tarnish:

  • Line aluminium foil in the bottom of a large sauce pan
  • Lay the cutlery on top of the foil, and fill the pan with water
  • Boil for 10 minutes
  • Remove the cutlery from the source pan ( you should see the foil turns black while the cutlery becomes shiny)
  • Wash the cutlery in hot soapy water
  • Rinse and dry
  • Leave the cutlery in a warm, dry place until it is completely dry
  • Wrap the cutlery in a special silver cloth and store it in a dark drawer or cupboard.
