No, Professor Higgs is an atheist. He never chose the term 'God particle', and has often said that he doesn't like journalists using the term as it might offend religious people; something he has no wish to do. The name actually comes from a book by another physicist, Nobel prize winner Leon Lederman, with the title 'The God Particle'.

'The God particle' is the name often given to the Higgs bosun. This is the subatomic particle whose existence scientists have been speculating about for over 50 years. The name bosun itself actuall comes from a famous Indian scientist called Satyendra Nath Bose.

The Large Hadron Collider was set up in the European Centre for Nuclear Research (CERN) in 2010, to conduct experiments to try and confirm the existence of the Higgs bosun. On 4 July 2012 it was finally announced that the Higgs bosun did exist. Apparently Professor Stephen Hawking had bet Higgs and his team that they wouldn't find it.
