The Goya Awards (Premios Goya in Spanish) are the most important film awards in Spain. The ceremony follow the same format of the American Academy Film Awards, the 'Oscars', and it is held annually since 1987, usually at end of January or February. The event is organized by the Academia de las Artes y las Ciencias Cinematográficas de España (Spanish Academy of the Cinematic Arts and Sciences) and takes place at the Teatro Lope de Vega in Madrid.
The award is a bust of the painter Francisco de Goya sculpted by Jose Luis Fernandez.
The categories of the 'Goyas' are basically the same as the Oscars but include some new such as:
Best New Director, Best New Actor, Best New Actress, Best European Film and Best Foreign Film in Spanish Language.
