Protein fiber spun by spiders is called spider silk. It is used by spiders to make different type of webs to catch food.

According to the 2011 Guinness World Record, the world's oldest spider silk is more than 120 million years ago. It was described in the journal 'Nature' by Swiss researcher Dr Samuel Zschokke who thinks the oldest spider silk is dated from the Early Cretaceous Period.

The specimen of the world's oldest spider silk was recovered in 1969 in Lebanon. However, its importance was not recognised until 2003.

The strand of the silk is about 4 mm and has tiny glue droplets. Those droplets are same as the ones nowadays' spiders use to catch insects.
