Although venetian blinds are stylish, they tend to accumulate grease and dust, and are very difficult to clean. You need to clean your blinds at least once a month to make it look nice.

  • Close the slates so they lay flat
  • Set the vacuum on a low setting with an upholstery brush
  • Start from the top and hold the blind steady
  • Vacuum the center of the blinds frist, and then move to the right side and left side of the blinds
  • Reverse the slats, and use the same process do the other side.

You can also use a wet tissue to wipe the slats, but not on wooden slats as it may cause discoloration.

There is venetian blind cleaner available, which you can buy on Amazon or big supermarkets. The venetian blind cleaner allows you to slide along the blind to remove dust. You need to gentle with metal blinds as they are very easy to be bent.

The above methods are only good to get rid of the dust, but not grease. Once the blinds get very greasy, you will have to wash them (except wooden venetian blinds)

  • The best way to wash blinds is take them off the windows. If thats not the option, you need to pad the window sill with old towels to catch the drips.
  • Add a dash of washing up liquid into a bowl of lukewarm water
  • Open the blind fully with slats horizontal
  • Wear think cotton gloves and dip your hands in the water
  • Run your finger along each slat
  • Work from top to bottom.
  • Rinse with plain water in the same way. If you have aluminium blinds, you can add 3 tbsp vinegar to a good shine.
  • Use a clean soft cloth to wipe dry the blinds.
  • Leave the blinds down until the slats are completely dry.
