What's the origin of hot cross buns?

Hot cross buns have been popular in Christian countries for hundreds of years, especially at Easter because of the Christian story of the Good Friday crucifixion. The cross is thought to give the cakes a special Christian association.

However, some historians think the habit of decorating cakes with a cross is older than Christianity. Easter itself derives from a pagan festival to honour the spring goddess Eostre, and it is thought early followers of this goddess may also have used the cross as a holy symbol, with the arms of the cross symbolising the quarters or phases of the moon.

It also became quite usual as Christianity spread to mark bread and other baked goods with a cross to bring luck, so at one point these buns wouldn't have been unusual. You can learn more about their history - and find a nice recipe if you fancy making some! -here.
