Spending time with your new baby, feeding, cuddling and caring for him or her are the main ways that parents naturally bond with their newborns. Some people worry if they don't feel an immediate closeness to their new child, but in fact this isn't unusual and the feelings nearly always come by themselves over the next few weeks and months.

Just simple things like giving the baby its bath, changing its nappy and holding and talking to him or her are also ways of showing and giving love; and both parents can do this together, so all three of you are bonding. In addition, a daily massage is both good for the baby and a lovely way to help you get closer - there are classes to help you do this.
You can also 'play' even with very small babies - simple games like peek-a-boo which help them to start recognising you early. But the main thing is just to be around your child and get to know them.
