Mothering Sunday this year (2014) is on 30 March in the UK this year, so it's in 2 and a half weeks' time. If you haven't already bought your mum a present or booked somewhere to take her out for lunch, it's time to start - especially if you are taking her out for a meal, as places do get very booked up on this day.
Mothering Sunday was originally a festival associated with the church, though there have been festivals in honour of motherhood since pagan times. But today's festival goes back to a time around the 16th century when it was fixed for the fourth Sunday of Lent. It is said that around this time a tradition started of girls who were working as domestic servants to be given this day off to go and visit their mothers. Traditionally the girl would also be given a simnel cake by her employer, although these are also associated with Easter.
