How do I become a teacher in the UK?

Most people take a degree first - in theory this can be in any subject, although if you have studied a subject that is in short supply, such as maths or a science, that could be an advantage. After the degree the usual route is to take a Post Graduate Certificate of Education (PGCE). This takes a year full time, though there are part time and distance learning options available. Sometimes it may be possibly to get financial help for a PGCE, depending on your situation.

For those without a degree, there are some alternative routes including the Registered Teacher Programme, or in some cases equivalent qualifications or experience are considered. For example, at present the UK government is looking at getting some former armed forces personnel into teaching.

There is a lot of advice and help available for would-be teachers, as well as regular events where you can go and ask more questions. You will find more ideas and information here.
