Now that 3D is getting more and more popular, a lot of people would probably argue that in fact it's better than IMAX, rather than the other way round. But on the whole, real cinema fans would mainly agree with you that IMAX is better.

A lot of this goes back to: What is a real cinema experience? For most of us it's still about seeing a huge screen, getting great sound effects, sitting back and being part of an audience. This is what you get with IMAX. 3D is another kind of experience. You put on the glasses and you're getting all these sensations that may be amazing in themselves, but they're extras. They can't be the whole reason you go to see a film. If you think about films you've really enjoyed, there are so many reasons including plot, acting, dialogue - unless big special effects are all you want in a movie, 3D isn't going to be the be-all and end-all.
