Rooibos is based on the Afrikaans word for the redbush or bush tea often drunk in parts of southern Africa. As well as being enjoyed for its flavour, traditionally this tea was also supposed to have health benefits including protection againts allergies and asthma.

Rooibos tea is now becoming popular in many parts of the world as a health drink. It is often promoted as rich in antioxidants and low in tannin and caffeine. These points are true, and no bad effects have yet been found, so on this basis it may be a good alternative to ordinary tea or coffee.

As for more specific health benefits, more studies are needed, but there are indications that it could help boost the immune system, and that the leaves could be effective against acne. Other claims, for example that rooibos has cancer fighting qualities, may be true but are still being tested. On the whole, though, it looks as though this tea may have some important qualities.
