What do I need to know before buying a dog?

First you need to think about whether you are able to care for a dog. Then you need to decide what breed you want, or at least what general type of dog. You have to think carefully about your lifestyle and what type of animal would fit into it. Do you have time to exercise a large dog, for instance, and can you afford the food? Do you know enough about dogs to be able to take care of one? Do you have children - if so, you need to choose a breed known for being gentle with children.

When you've chosen the breed, the best way to find a seller is by word of mouth. If you don't know anyone who has bought a dog from that seller, you are safest going with someone who is registered with a reputable organisation, or even better a not-for-profit organisation such as Doginfomat - you can find some excellent advice and helpful links here.
