What are the positives of being shy around people who you aren't close friends with? Are there any?

Yes, there are. It may not feel like it, because extreme shyness isn't a nice feeling for the person who has it, but from the point of view of others - and therefore, of your own popularity - it has a lot of positives.
If you are shy and accept it - ie, don't try to cover it with pretended confidence - you aren't likely to be pushy, to put others down or talk endlessly about yourself. These are the really unattractive qualities. Being shy is a great opportunity to observe the poeple around you, to listen to them and get an idea of what they are like. Shy doesn't mean unfriendly - in fact, the very fact that you are worried about coping in social situations says to me that you would like to interact with other people and be liked. In other words, you care.
If you smile, let people talk and show that, even if you don't feel comfortable at the centre of a group, you like to be around people and are interested in them, you will be liked, and then you will feel able to relax and be yourself in company.
