Most mechanical engineering jobs require a good degree. To become a chartered engineer you would probably need an accredited degree in mechanical engineering (MEng) or the equivalent. However, there are jobs where you can start with an HND or similar diploma, as some employers prefer to give further training themselves. Also, for older candidates, if you have many years' experience of engineering work a degree may not be necessary.
It's also a good idea to get some work experience before you start applying for jobs, so you can ask your school or college to help you find a placement with a potential employer, or look for holiday work in a suitable company.
You need a good general level of scientific knowledge as well as your specialist training; good IT skills; fluent speaking and writing skills and the ability to work in a team. Some jobs may also ask for a foreign language.
