The lead singer is Matthew James Bellamy, usually called Matt. He was born in 1978 and later went to live in Teignmouth, Devon. He has a musical background, as his father, George, was also in a band in the 1960s (The Tornados). Matthew started playing the piano when he was just 6 years old. When his parents divorced he lived for a while with his grandmother, who encouraged him to take up the guitar at 14.

In 1994, when Bellamy was 16, he formed a band called Rocket Baby Dolls with his school friends Christopher Wostenholme and Dominic Howard. They later changed the name to Muse and have been together ever since. They have released five albums and played at Wembley to sell-out crowds. Since their single 'Survival' was chosen for the 2012 Olympics official song, Muse have become even more famous.
