In in the 4th century BC, the great Greek conquest gave travellers access to the civilisations of the Babylonians, Persians, and Egyptians. The travellers were hugely impressed by the architectures and began to list what they saw. The best known and earliest surviving list was from Greek epigrammist Antipater of Sidon's poem around 140 BC. Among the seven sights, it seems the Temple of Artemis at Ephesus was his favourite.
