The hottest regions of India are Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu in the south-east. In these regions the average yearly temperature is over 27 degrees celsius. The northern regions are cold, with glaciers and alpine weather conditions. Parts of the west of the country are also extremely hot, with desert conditions in some areas. Further down in the south-west, in Kerala for example, the heat is tropical; rain forest can be found in these regions.

India's climate varies hugely, with extremes of weather ranging from intense heat to extreme cold. The country is also prone to extreme weather events such as floods, drought and storms. Although the weather and climate vary so widely, the prevailing climate is tropical. Winters are cold in the north but very mild in the south-east; summer starts early and the hottest months are April or May in many areas. The monsoon or rainy season starts in June and comes from the south-west.
