Yes, the Republic of Malta is certainly a country, though a very small one (about 120 square miles). It is quite near southern Italy, about 50 miles away from Sicily, and is about 175 miles away from Tunisia in North Africa.

It has been an independent country since 1964. Before that it had a varied history, and was part of the British Empire before independence. Even today, English is one of the official languages. Malta is now in the European Union and has joined the euro.

People go to Malta for many reasons, one of which is the warm sunny climate. But the islands are also rich in history, with art and architecture from all the many civilizations that have influenced the country.

Tourism is a big industry in Malta and tourists are well catered for. There is seaside accommodation, water sports, spa treatments - everything you might expect from a southern Mediterranean holiday destination - as well as attractions unique to Malta itself. You can learn more here.
