Most people would agree that the best album is Time Out, which was recorded by the Dave Brubeck Quartet in New York in 1959. It contains the world-famous 'Take Five', which has appeared in so many film and TV soundtrack and been played by musicians all over the world.

Time Out was successful with the public almost from the beginning, but received a lot of bad reviews from critics, partly because it was so unusual. Instead of the usual 4/4 time, it uses rhythms used in waltzes and other musical forms very different from jazz. In the case of 'Take Five' the time is 9/8, and this was inspired by a tour in Turkey made by the quartet, who were attracted by the sound of Turkish street performers.

Other tracks include 'Blue Rondo a la Turk' and 'Kathy's Waltz'.

The Brubeck Quartet, and Brubeck alone, made several other albums - you can get an overview of them here.
