The market of la Boqueria in Barcelona is one of the most beautiful and visited spots in Barcelona. Its gorgeous displays of fruit, meat and fish and many other country produce makes it a very attractive and delicious place to see. But perhaps what most people like of this market is its country flavour, the human touch that emanates from the little family run stalls that serve you kindly, unlike the impersonal and industrial style of most chain supermarkets.

The origins of the market are not clear although early documents suggest that the market was probably working by the year 1217. These documents talk of a meat stall very near where la Boqueria is actually located. This makes a lot of sense as in Spain and Catalonia (and throughout the mediterranean), cities used to grow around markets and precisely la Boqueria is situated at one of the entrances of the city in the walls that surrounded it. At the beginning, farmers from the country side travelled selling their products and the entrance of the city wall was the place where they stopped to sell their products.
