La Barceloneta is a charming working class neighbourhood situated in Barcelona's port. Its narrow streets covered with hanging clothes drying in the sun has a very special enchant. La Barceloneta is one of the last neighbourhoods to survive the process of gentrification that has plagued Barcelona and this is why it still retains a very familiar and homely atmosphere as it is still inhabited by families who have been living there for generations.

La Barceloneta has a spectacular food offer mainly based on fresh seafood but it is wise to avoid the most crowded restaurants (especially those who use "aggressive" practices to drag you in like stopping you in the middle of the street). One of my favourite restaurants is La Mar Salada (Joan de Borbo street, 58-59), which offers an excellent paella, a rich assortment of salads and a delicious variety of fish.

Another restaurant is Paco Alcalde (Almirall Aixada street) which also offers a very good variety of mediterranean cuisine.

Finally, Cities like Barcelona are special for the climate, for its architecture but also for the people who live there. Nobody wants to visit a city without real neighbourhoods where real people live. That's what makes a city special. If the process of gentrification is not stopped, citizens will be progressively sent out of the city into the outskirts in search for more affordable places to live, having to abandon the places where they have always lived. It depends on all of us that not only rich people can enjoy the city.
