Gwaun Valley is in Pembrokeshire in South Wales, near Fishguard. Its people celebrate New Year on 13 January, rather than on 1 January as is usual elsewhere in Britain and Europe generally.

This is because in Gwaun Valley the people never abandoned the Julian calendar - the old Christian method of calculating the dates. This calendar was replaced in the 18th century by the Gregorian calendar, which took away 11 days to make the dates fit more logically. However, several countries never abandoned the old system - the most famous example is Russia, which still celebrates Christmas on 6 January - and some individual areas also decided to stay with the Julian system.

In the Gwaun Valley, children go from house to house on 13 January singing Welsh songs, and although it isn't officially a public holiday, most of them don't go to school. Their parents sometimes go with them, especially the smaller children, or else the adults meet together for a song and a drink later.
