In the past Japan, like several other Asian countries, had a festival based on the same calendar as the Chinese New year, in late January or early February. However, since the 19th century they have mainly celebrated it on 1 January.

New Year is a very important festival in Japan. The celebrations go on for three days; most people don't work at this time, and the main purpose of the holiday is to spend time with your family.

As with New Year festivals all round the world, the Japanese festival is about making a fresh start. So people spring clean their houses, finish off all their chores and try to forgive old grudges or solve any remaining problems.

People also prepare special meals, send greeting cards and, in many cases, visit temples or other important religious buildings. The temples bells are rung at midnight on New Year's Eve and a lot people gather round to listen.
