I believe in Japan if you say 'byebye', everyone will understand its meaning. However, the nuance of bye bye(バイバイ) is a bit childish. It is often heard from the conversations between students.'さようなら' is often used in a formal situation or in a situation that you wont be able to see each other for a long time. It is pronounced as 'sayo nara'.
