Since this question was asked, of course the answer is no longer in doubt. On 21 July 2012, Bradley Wiggins made history by being the first British cyclist ever to win the Tour de France.

Wiggins is 32 years old and a professional cyclist who won his first medal at the age of 20. He had already won several Olympic medals before his recent Tour de France victory, including three gold, which makes him one of the top British Olympic contestants too.

2012 has been his best year yet - he has also won three other sporting events so far this year. In fact he is now the only person in history to win all four major French cycling events in one year. He was one of the favourites to win the Tour de France even at the start, and with his team (Team Sky) has been leading or close to leading throughout the race.
